چکیده

We show that a vibrational instability of the spectrum of weakly interacting quasilocal harmonic modes creates the maximum in the inelastic scattering intensity in glasses, the Boson peak. The instability, limited by anharmonicity, causes a complete reconstruction of the vibrational density of states ~DOS! below some frequency vc , proportional to the strength of interaction. The DOS of the new harmonic modes is independent of the actual value of the anharmonicity. It is a universal function of frequency depending on a single parameter — the Boson peak frequency vb which is a function of interaction strength. The excess of the DOS over the Debye value is }v at low frequencies and linear in v in the interval vb!v!vc . Our results are in an excellent agreement with recent experimental studies.

Vibrational States of Glassy and Crystalline Orthoterphenyl

Low-frequency vibrations of glassy and crystalline orthoterphenyl are studied by means of neutron scattering. Phonon dispersions are measured along the main axes of a single crystal, and the corresponding longitudinal and transversal sound velocities are obtained. For glassy and polycrystalline samples, a density of vibrational states is determined and cross-checked against other dynamic observ...

Boson peak and its relation to acoustic attenuation in glasses.

Experimental results on the density of states and on the acoustic modes of glasses in the THz region are compared to the predictions of two categories of models. A recent one, solely based on an elastic instability, does not account for most observations. Good agreement without adjustable parameters is obtained with models including the existence of nonacoustic vibrational modes at THz frequenc...

Effects of coordination and pressure on sound attenuation, boson peak and elasticity in amorphous solids.

Connectedness and applied stress strongly affect elasticity in solids. In various amorphous materials, mechanical stability can be lost either by reducing connectedness or by increasing pressure. We present an effective medium theory of elasticity that extends previous approaches by incorporating the effect of compression, of amplitude e, allowing one to describe quantitative features of sound ...

Heterogeneous shear elasticity of glasses: the origin of the boson peak

The local elasticity of glasses is known to be inhomogeneous on a microscopic scale compared to that of crystalline materials. Their vibrational spectrum strongly deviates from that expected from Debye's elasticity theory: The density of states deviates from Debye's law, the sound velocity shows a negative dispersion in the boson-peak frequency regime and there is a strong increase of the sound...

Rigidity-based approach to the boson peak in amorphous solids: from sphere packing to amorphous silica

Glasses have a large excess of low-frequency vibrational modes in comparison with continuous elastic body, the so-called Boson Peak, which appears to correlate with several crucial properties of glasses, such as transport or fragility. I review recent results showing that the Boson Peak is a necessary consequence of the weak connectivity of the solid. I explain why in assemblies repulsive spher...
